United Kingdom Landowner Agreements

  • Groundspeak respects the wishes of land managers and land owners.
  • The rules listed below are their rules, belonging neither to the reviewers nor to Groundspeak. Responsibility for meeting these rules rests with the cache owner and responsibility for enforcement of those rules rests with the land manager.
  • Note that this page is a work in progress. Other land policies concerning geocaching will be added as that information becomes available.

Landowner Database

This database contains a list of landowners and managers who approve of geocaching or who do not allow it. It contains useful links to maps to check areas and details of how to apply for permission.

The table is sorted alphabetically by Landowner name. If you want to search for a specific entry or a keyword, just press Control+f on your keyboard and enter the text in the browser search box.

Using map overlays

The map overlays in the Map Resource column can be downloaded and opened in Google Earth which is a free download for a PC and also as apps for Apple and Android. All maps are provided for information only and may not necessarily be up to date or accurate. It is the responsibility of the cache owner to check a location. Forestry Commission maps are provided under the terms of the Open Government Licence.

All visitors, including geocachers, must observe all warning and prohibition signs.
  • No vehicle access is permitted beyond the public highway or dedicated parking places. Vehicles must be parked sensibly and must not block forest entrances as these provide emergency access to the forest.

Geocaching is not permitted in all the NWT reserves. The map links on the left show you which ones are allowed and which are not allowed.

Northumberland Wildlife Trust Guidelines

  1. No geocaches should be placed on our nature reserves without prior written agreement.
  2. The geocacher must apply for permission using the Northumberland Wildlife Trust's Geocaching application form.
  3. Geocaches must not compromise the conservation objectives on our nature reserves. This could mean at certain time periods the cache should be removed e.g. bird nesting period.
  4. Geocaches may be asked to be temporally disabled to allow for reserve management. The Reserve Manager would advise on length of closure or a suitable alternative location.
  5. Northumberland Wildlife Trust will keep a register of caches on our reserves and at any time can review the placed caches. We reserve the right to withdraw consent for caches. If this happens then the cache owner must remove the container.
  6. The cache container should be clearly marked as a geocache.
  7. Only items that would be deemed safe and acceptable for an unaccompanied child to find should be placed in a cache.
  8. No items of food or drink of any kind should be placed in the cache.
  9. Caches should not be buried. Holes should not be dug in order to place a cache.
  10. Caches should not be hidden in animal holes or runs.
  11. Geocachers should not be required to climb a tree to reach a container.
  12. Caches should not be placed inside a polythene bag.
  13. Fences should never be crossed (other than through a gate or by a stile) when placing or seeking a cache.
  14. Maintenance of the cache is the responsibility of the placer.
  15. When leaving the cache site after hiding or placing a cache there should be no visual sign of disturbance.
  16. No cache should be placed in or on a dry stone wall.
  17. Bear in mind that some people searching may miss the target so it’s not simply a question of where the cache is but where people might interpret it to be. Do not hide caches in a location which may suffer from over enthusiastic searching (e.g. under moss or other vegetation).
  18. Permission may be given on a trial basis to allow the impact on a site to be assessed.

If you are visiting a reserve please refer to the guidance on access and parking on their website.
